Straight Tube Heat Exchangers

To provide the same amount of heat transfer as a straight tube heat exchanger for smaller spaces, engineers replace the straight inner pipe with a helical tube coil. This allows for more heat transfer in a smaller length shell, but increases the pressure drop across the heat exchanger. Helical coil heat exchangers have a more complex flow patterns due to the geometrical configuration of helical coils, which also imparts centrifugal force on the inner coil flow while increasing the pressure drop on the shell side.
